New handheld to hit UK this summer

It's called the Gizmondo and it's a "futuristic multi-entertainer". Blimey

A new handheld games machine called Gizmondo will be launched in the UK this summer, with a global roll-out expected to kick off in the autumn.

The device - which was originally called Gametrac - features wireless connectivity, MP3 and movie playback, multimedia messaging, a built-in camera and GPS functions. It will initially be distributed in the UK by Toys R Us and the retail price of the machine will be partly subsidised by advertising, which will be beamed directly to it.

The Windows CE .Net-based unit, which was first unveiled at January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is described by Gizmondo parent company Tiger Telematics as being a "futuristic multi-entertainer".

However, with Sony's PSP, Nintendo's DS and Nokia's updated N-Gage, the QD, all due for release in the coming months, it'll be interesting to see where - or indeed how - the improbably-named Gizmondo will fit in. We're expecting to get our mitts on one at E3, so look out for a hands-on report in a couple of weeks' time.
