Battlefield 2142 - Weapon Tests

Weapon designer Alan Kertz lets the info fly about balancing, unlocking, and playtesting the infantry weapons of the next Battlefield.
by Alan Kertz - Designer, DICE

July 21, 2006 - Battlefield and game development have one major thing in common: they both take a team effort. My name is Alan Kertz and on behalf of the Battlefield 2142 team I will be giving you an inside look at soldier weapons and how they fit into the Battlefield experience. As the Weapons Designer on Battlefield 2142 it's my job to invent new and cool toys and tools for the Battlefield soldier as well as tweak and balance those weapons so they fit the rock-paper-scissors gameplay. Some readers may be more familiar with my alias Demize99, both from the competitive Battlefield scene and as a Modder for various Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam Mods. It's my goal to bring a balanced, entertaining, and exciting Battlefield experience to all players, casual or competitive.

One of the first things you'll notice about 2142 is that the guns look, sound, and feel great. We've taken the "through the gun experience" introduced in Battlefield 2 and brought it to a whole new level. Guns in 2142 are still guns, they fire bullets, they have kick and recoil, and there's really no substitute for playing 2142 with a great set of speakers. Your neighbors are going to hate our guns, because you'll always want to play at full volume. The sound of bullets impacting near your head, the chatter of your squad's machine gun as he suppresses the enemy, and the feeling of looking through your assault rifle's sights and bringing down the enemy really makes 2142 the best Battlefield infantry experience ever.

A lot of teamwork goes into bringing that great shooter experience to the player. Since 2142 is set in a future world of our own design, we have had a lot of artistic and design freedom to create cool new looks and functions for weapons. To start creating a weapon for 2142 we looked first at how the weapon would fit into the rock-paper-scissors gameplay. The artists and designers sit down and discuss the role of the weapon and some of its key features: damage, accuracy, range, rate of fire, role, team, etc. EU weapons tend to look heavier and bulkier and they fire that way also. You might do more damage, but you'll shoot a bit slower, or have less ammo than the equivalent PAC weapon. The PAC weapons are lighter and more high tech, they'll fire a bit faster and tend to do slightly lower damage.

Of course with the large number of base and unlock weapons, balance is always the key focus. We've extended the blending of art and function to our unlock weapons as well by offering heavy or light weapons in the same role as the base weapon. When creating a new weapon we have to carefully consider how each weapon fits in the kit, in the infantry experience, and in the game as a whole. To fit a new weapon into the kit we look at weapons with similar functions and tweak things like recoil, accuracy, and power. Number crunching can be quite useful here and the weapon designers are known to spend a large amount of time tweaking spreadsheets and creating graphs to try and find that ideal value for a really balanced Battlefield.

Fitting the weapon into the infantry experience is a bit more abstract since the role of each weapon varies greatly. A great example of this is the balance in 2142 between the assault rifles and the Support class's machine gun. The assault rifle's strength is its ability to fire highly accurate bursts at close to medium range while the machine gun is best at laying down great amounts of fire and really putting fear into an enemy. The machine gun in 2142 actually gets more accurate as you fire, allowing the Support class to offer consistent, accurate suppressive fire. The Assault soldier facing an established Support gunner has to find cover and find it fast or gamble his life on making that key shot.

The next task, fitting the new weapon into the game as a whole is definitely the most difficult. Due to the number of vehicles, weapons, and equipment in 2142 spreadsheets and calculators are just plain out. The only way to truly effectively balance a Battlefield game is to playtest, and playtest, and playtest it some more. So that's exactly what we do, day in and day out and we have been for months. The result is a Battlefield where every toy and tool has strengths and weaknesses that balances against other tools and toys, rock-paper-scissors at its finest. However we're not content to just keep that playtesting to ourselves. Instead we're opening the development process to the community's feedback more than ever through beta test opportunities.

Based on feedback from the Battlefield 2 community we've expanded the unlock system in 2142. The new system includes 40 unlockable items spread evenly between each of the 4 classes and general soldier unlocks. For example, there is the IT-33 Optical Camouflage device which can be unlocked by the Recon soldier to make himself blend into the environment or the FRG-1 Fragmentation Grenade available as an unlock for any soldier. Though a soldier must choose a select few of his unlocks to equip via the new Kit Customization system, each unlock helps strengthen the role of the class.

The Recon class is the master of both the super long range and demolitions. Battlefield 2 players who enjoyed either Sniper or the Spec Ops class will feel right at home with the Recon soldier. The Recon soldier's unlocks include the high explosive RDX DemoPak, as well as enhancements for the available sniper rifles. A very advanced Recon soldier can also obtain the IT-33 Optical Camouflage device and play a stealth game. The Lambert Carbine is also unlockable allowing for those special infiltration missions aboard the enemy Titan, though the Lambert's power and range are significantly lower than the assault rifles.

The Assault class is a strong infantry kit, highly capable of engaging enemy soldiers at all ranges, though he has little to offer against vehicles. Always equipped with a basic Medical Hub the Assault soldier can heal his teammates, and additional unlocks like the AED-6 Defibrillator can increase his medical abilities. The Assault kit also contains upgrades to the kit's base assault rifles; the add-on Herzog AR-Shotgun and the PK-74 AR-Rocket expand the abilities of the Assault soldier. The AR-Rocket is an especially cool weapon which allows the soldier to set a distance and airburst detonate the rocket, allowing for kills on targets behind cover.

The Engineer class is the class for those players who love to drive or blow up vehicles. Any Engineer can repair friendly vehicles or use his rocket launcher to blow up enemy vehicles, while the SMG carried by the Engineer allows some basic defense against enemy soldiers in close combat. Anti-Vehicle mines are also available, both the powerful II-14 EMP Mine and the homing anti-vehicle II-29 Motion Mine which will detect and seek out enemy vehicles that get too close to the mine. The truly dedicated Engineer will be able to trade out his original Anti-Vehicle missiles for a powerful Anti-Air missile system. Pilots had better be on their toes when an AA equipped Engineer is on the battlefield!

The Support class brings truly awesome fire support to a squad through the light machine gun. Any Support soldier can rearm his fellow soldiers with his Ammo Hub, and the A12 Enforcer Sentry Gun can be unlocked and deployed in key defensive positions. Support lacks the direct Anti-Vehicle weaponry of the Engineer, but the Support soldier can temporarily disable vehicles with EMP grenades. A well placed EMP grenade can give your squad Recon soldier time to plant RDX on that Battle Walker or allow an Engineer an easy shot on the Walker's weaker armor areas. On board the Titan the Support soldier can greatly increase his close quarters effectiveness if he has unlocked the Clark 15B Shotgun.

However, the single best part of any Battlefield game has never been a super weapon, or an ultimate vehicle. It is instead about how all the toys and tools combine in the rock-paper-scissors sandbox and the gameplay that emerges as a result. Nothing demonstrates how the tools and toys come together better than the squad experience. For example, in a recent playtest a particularly nasty EU sniper was punishing a PAC squad attempting to cross an open field between them and their objective. Unfortunately for this lone sniper, this squad was a diverse collection of classes with a wide selection of unlocked tools and toys.

The PAC squad's Recon soldier located the sniper in his tower, and by aiming at him revealed the enemy's Network Battlefield information to his entire squad. The squad was immediately and automatically alerted to the enemy through the icon on their 3D map. The Support gunner in the squad used his Shuko LMG to suppress the sniper, forcing him to duck for cover or be mowed down in the hailstorm of high velocity rounds. The Squad Leader's SD-8 Accipiter Sentry Drone also picked up the Network Battlefield target automatically and added its own suppressive firepower. The squad's Assault soldier then dialed in the distance to the sniper's perch for his PK-74 AR-Rocket. The rocket's airburst detonated just past the sniper's cover, eliminating him and allowing the squad to move up and secure their objective.

In 2142 we've given players the tools and toys to accomplish their objectives, enhance their squad play experience, and really feel every bullet fired through every weapon in the game. Customizable kit load and an expanded unlock system allows each soldier to personalize their play style based on the unique tools and toys available to the Recon, Assault, Engineer and Support soldier. Combined with balanced gameplay and the new Titan game mode, Battlefield 2142 will redefine the infantry experience this fall.
