Driver 2006 to hit PS2 and Xbox next year

It's the news that nobody's been waiting for: Atari has today announced that it is working on - ulp! - a follow-up to last year's disastrous Driver 3.

Currently in development by series, er, masterminds Reflections Interactive, the game will be released for PS2 and Xbox and currently has a working title of Driver 2006.

Atari reckons that it will take the series back "to its gameplay roots with a highly sophisticated, adrenaline-pumping car chase AI and unprecedented vehicle dynamics and physics".

The online-compatible game is set in an allegedly "photorealistic" interpretation of New York City and features a "seamless" open mission structure based around a central storyline.

"The approach, style and gameplay of the original Driver game spawned a multi-million selling global videogame franchise that set the pace for the action driving genre explosion of recent times," comments Atari Europe marketing bloke Cyril Voiron, shrewdly avoiding any mention whatsoever of the critically slated Driver 3.

The next instalment of the Driver series will be released for PS2 and Xbox next year
