The game plays out much like the Super NES classic Legend of the Mystical Ninja, fusing action with adventure.

Being a DS game, of course, Goemon makes a few concessions to the technology. The top screen, perhaps not surprisingly, sports a map throughout most of the action. The touch screen also comes into play in strange ways: The gameplay is actually displayed on the bottom screen, so the touch interactivity actually works in tandem with the standard D-Pad-based control. Tapping on certain enemies will knock them over, or cause untouchable ghosts to materialize and become vulnerable. Plucking a tightrope will cause it to snap back into place and launch its occupants sky-high. Tapping townsfolk or signs will allow Goemon to interact with them. What touch-screen elements we've seen are, to date, fairly uneven in their application, but there is at least some mild creativity on display.
