Backward Compatibility Isn't Stopping Yet
Reassurance for X360 owners comes from a marketing blog.
by Kathleen Sanders
June 2, 2006 - Yesterday we reported on some scary comments made by Peter Moore regarding the potential end of backward compatible games for the Xbox 360.
Employees of Microsoft Games Global Marketing team blogged about this hot topic on Gamescoreblog. They spoke directly with the team working on the next back compat update.
According to the post the backward compatibility team is in the testing phase of the next update. They hope to have it ready in the next few weeks and it should include about a dozen titles.
"Many games did unique things to take advantage of the processing power of the Xbox," explained John Porcaro from Microsoft Games' marketing team, "and that makes it difficult to emulate, especially when we then have to make new code work with existing (and future) compatible titles. But rest assured, we're not done yet."
Hot on the heels of that post was the official word from a Microsoft rep who echoed the blog, "We recognize that backward compatibility is important to gamers, and you can rest assured we're not done yet. In fact, the team is currently in the testing phase of another update, which we anticipate will be released in the next few weeks. This update will include around a dozen games that will join the list of more than 200 titles that are backward compatible today."
So, it seems backward compatibility is moving forward... for now.[/b]
