I got my shiny new copy of Yoshi's Touch and Go today. I booted it up and started on the first of four play modes. The game is really fun, full of technique and getting the high scores is actually quite challenging compared to most other DS games. It was only when I returned to the main menu I realised with growing horror that those four modes were it. That's all. No story mode, no world map, no nothing. You click on a mode and you do the level with a certain goal trying to beat your high scores. The enemies and layout only vary slightly each time. Yoshi's Touch and Go has a whopping four levels total.
This is crazy, maybe I'm missing something but I doubt it. I know Nintendo games have been getting shorter but four levels? Fuck off. I was expecting a decent one player mode to rival the magic of the SNES version but all I get is 4 levels that last about 3 minutes each. Yes getting a new high score is compulsive but theres nothing beyond that. I don't know what to say.
Score attack's level is the same every time.
Time attack's level is the same every time.
Magikoopa attack's level is the same every time. There might be some slight variations in the layout of the spikey guys but not noticablly.
As for endless attack the sections in that aren't truely random, they're just the same small sections (of which there are very few) glued together in a different order each time.
I was expecting bosses, castles, caves, ski slopes and all the other stuff that made Yoshi's Island so great. Theres no variation in theme between the four modes. The worst thing about the game is that for something thats only fun in short bursts the modes rely on nothing but rote memorisation of the layouts and where the next enemy will come from. The time attack one is also very weak and feels like very little effort was put into it.
